the white house has suspended $800 million in aid to pakistan's military. this comes after a statement by the chairman of the joint chiefs, admiral mike mullen, that pakistan security forces may have allowed the killing of a pakistani journalist. s shalim shahzad was investigating. ties between the two countries have been strained since the killing of osama bin laden. new overnight, a water main break sent water into the street near key bridge and canal road in georgetown. our crew snapped pictures of the gushing water. the break left a lot of standing water on the road. we left messages with d.c. water, but we haven't heard from the report yet. a new report says pepco tops the list of the most hated companies in america. that's according to the american customer satisfaction index group. the utility company ranked dead last in customer satisfaction because of complaints about poor service, high prices, and privacy intrusions.

pepco was followed by delta, time warner cable took the third spot, comcast took the fourth spot. comcast, of course, is the parent company of nbc universal, which owns nbc 4. a cable tv provider charter communications came in fifth. bank of america, jp morgan chase, american airlines, and u.s. airways also made the list. turning now to the weather on this monday morning, you may need a nice tall thermos of ice cold lemonade today. >> and stay inside. it's going to be building. we've got a mini heat wave building. i'm meteorologist tom kierein. starting off this monday morning, back to work. it's a mild morning. no travel problems weather-wise. don't have any fog around. temperatures under a clear sky, upper 70s washington. low 70s arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties. farther to our west, near 70 around the blue ridge. parts of the shenandoah valley have dipped into the 60s as well

>> danella, thanks very much. today prince george's county police will hold a press conference to announce they have made an arrest in the murder of a convenience store clerk. back in april, 69-year-old richard chung sun nam was killed inside the market grocery store on bladensburg. the robber then set the store on fire to cover up what might have been a robbery attempt. in prince george's county today, police will release surveillance video of a possible shooting suspect. they responded to a call around 3:00 sunday morning at budget inn on 3100 block of branch avenue and temple hills. the shooting victim was taken to the hospital where the victim is expected to recover. there have been no arrests yet in this case. the sex abuse trial against redskins lineman albert haynesworth has been postponed until next month. the skins' $100 million man was supposed to appear in court this

morning, but the attorneys asked it be delayed to august the 2nd to accommodate the schedules of some defense witnesses. haynesworth is charged with misdemeanor sex abuse after a waitress at the "w" hotel accused him of groping her back in february. his attorneys will be in this morning to confirm that new date. new overnight, rescuers pulled dozen of bodies from the wreckage of a derailed train in northern india. at least 67 people died and more than 100 were injured when an express train left the tracks. the conductor reportedly slammed on the emergency brakes to avoid hitting cattle that had wandered onto the tracks. the train was doing 60 miles per hour when it derailed. india's rail system is one of the largest in the world, carrying some 14 million passengers a year. dozens of children are among the nearly 100 who are missing after an overloaded cruise boat sank on the volga river in russia. so far nine are confirmed dead. 80 have been pulled out of the

water. the cruise boat was carrying 185 people for a scenic trip on the volga when the boat went down sunday. that boat was only certified to carry 120 people. the water is 65 feet deep in the area where the boat sank. the cause is still under investigation. funeral services for former first lady betty ford will begin tomorrow in california and will end with her burial in michigan on thursday. the wife of former president gerald r. ford died friday at the age of 93. there will be a funeral service tomorrow morning. former first lady rosalyn carter and coky roberts are expected to attend. another funeral service will take place on thursday in grand rapids, michigan, which would have been the former president's 98th birthday. d.c. is the number one housing market in the country in terms of recovery. the real estate company clear capital said by year's end

average home prices will climb more than 7% and regain one-third of the value lost since 2006. meanwhile, prices nationally are expected to drop more than 3% before 2012. clear capital named virginia beach the worst performing major housing market in the country and blamed high unemployment there as a factor. other top reporting markets include new york, dallas, and san francisco. the royal newlyweds should be wedding home to great britain this morning after wrapping up their north american trip. their final stop included two days in california, where the couple got to see two different sides of los angeles. nbc's jinah kim has more on the trip. >> reporter: the duke and duchess of cambridge ended their final day in los angeles by showing their compassionate sides. they visited inner city arts in los angeles, a nonprofit group

a study by the highway traffic safety administration shows a sharp decline in texting behind the wheel in two pilot programs. one study in hartford, connecticut, showed a 50% drop in handheld cell use and a 72% drop in texting while driving. another study in syracuse showed a 32% drop in both categories. the programs use stepped up enforcement and media campaigns to discourage 'tdistracted driving. the car you drive in ten years could be smaller thanks to increased mileage standards. the government and automakers are in talks over how high the mileage on cars will be. the obama administration is calling for cars to average 56 miles per gallon by 2025. right now car makers are required to have their cars average 35 miles to the gallon by 2016. higher mileage standards means smaller cars, more electrics, and hybrids, and likely higher prices. starting today, you can reserve tickets to visit the

national september 11th memorial at the world trade center site in new york. the memorial opens to the public september 12th, a day after events marking the ten-year anniversary of the deadly attacks. log on to 9/11 memorial.org to reserve passes. the passes will be at specific times. only 1,500 people can fit into the memorial at a time. the casey anthony case is an example why u.s. federal courts should not take up cases of suspected terrorists. just last week a florida jury found the mother not guilty in the murder of the death of her daughter caylee. this weekend mcconnell said that proves the difficulty of getting a conviction in the u.s. court. he says military courts should take up the conviction of suspected terrorists. breaking headlines about a casey anthony on facebook, do not click on that. it is a scam. you might see it as a link or a download to a video chat app.

this new computer virus comes out just as casey anthony prepares to get out of jail this week, and facebook recently unveiled this new video conferencing fellowship with skype. police need your help finding a man wanted for murder. police are looking for this man, melvin williams smith in connection with the deadly shooting of a frederick woman. the 27-year-old goes by the nickname rock. police say he had been involved in a romantic relationship with the women. he's also considered armed and dangerous and has a history of run-ins with the law. the fbi is investigating whether a child pornography ring could be involved in the murder of felicia barnes. that's according to a north carolina television station. the 17-year-old went missing while visiting family in baltimore last december. her naked body was found four months later near the dam on the susquehanna river. authorities are seeking warrants and facebook and e-mail for

barnes and four men. authorities have reason to believe those accounts may have evidence of child sex crimes or pornography. an unusual catch by a fisherman in delaware has led to a multiagency investigation this morning. police say a maryland man was fishing north of fenwick island, delaware, when he reeled in a clump of hair tangled with sunglasses, a shark's tooth necklace, and hair bands. the man turned the items in to park rangers, who called in the coast guard and state troopers to help investigate. they don't know if the hair is human, but it is described as having a decaying odor with snails and crabs and other sea life entangled in it. the medical examiner is trying to determine if that hair is human, and if so, which gender. this morning more fallout from the phone hacking scandal involving journalists in london. ceo rupert murdoch shut down his tabloid "news of the world." he flew to london yesterday on its final day of publication.

british news reports u.s. federal investigators could look into allegations that the tabloid routinely paid police officers for information. scotland yard is already investigating allegations that they hacked into the voicemails of murder victims, families of fallen soldiers, celebrities, and politicians. groupon is now getting more personal. they announced they'll collect more information about its users. it sent e-mails about the privacy policy change to its 83 million users this weekend. groupon will share collected information with other businesses in an effort to bring you more relevant deals, it says. it named the travel website expedia as one business partner that allows it to offer users more categories for coupons. some analysts say the privacy policy change is one step in groupon becoming a public company. if you've walked around outdoors in the middle of the day in the washington area, you know it's been a hot summer.

now the area's oppressive heat and stifling humidity have earned the nation's capital a dubious honor. the weather channel has ranked washington, d.c., the sixth hottest city in the country. and we've been ranked the hottest city in the northeast. we found several folks trying to stay cool out there over the weekend. emergency officials say they see a 25% increase in the number of calls coming in during the heat wave. the weather channel used a combination of stats to come up with the rankings. yuma, arizona, was ranked the hottest. >> we not only get the heat we get the nice lovely humidity to make us really enjoy it. >> he called it lovely. tom? >> and then you'll be pining for this, though, when we're in february. we'll take a little humidity. why not? >> we're never satisfied. there's the sky right now over the washington monument. not too humid yet. it was delightful. great summer weather for saturday and sunday.

today it is going to be turning more humid as the day progresses. 77 in reagan national. in prince george's county, it's in the low 70s right near the chesapeake bay. we're in the mid and upper 70s this morning on the eastern shore. many locations right around 70. farther west and north, arlington, fairfax counties. they are in the low 70s there. around the shenandoah valley, blue ridge. the cooler spots as usual this morning are around western maryland and much of western service. they're in the 60s. southern shenandoah valley as well, the 60s. most of the region, though, we'll have a southerly and southwesterly wind. that will build the heat and humidity throughout the day. these are the expected highs today. should be into the low and mid-90s, this dark red zone all around our region. highs in the upper 80s out of the mountains. it will be in the low 90s on the eastern shore, and over the last 12 hours, we've had this nice dry air mass over us. but our winds are just now beginning to shift into the south/southwest. that is going to be tapping the

humidity that's coming up off the gulf of mexico, and it will be in place here as we get into the afternoon. during the afternoon with the air pollution will be higher in the afternoon. so much of the afternoon is going to be incredibly hot. if you have to be outside, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. if you don't have to, stay in the ac as much as you can during the afternoon. you've got to respect this kind of heat. you can easily go into heat exhaustion with this kind of heat. actually getting hotter tomorrow. overnight tonight, mostly clear. a muggy and warm evening. by dawn tomorrow, upper 70s. hot and humid on tuesday. highs near 100 degrees tomorrow afternoon. we also have the possibility of a few scattered thunder showers a little earlier in the day, perhaps late night in the

free agent jayson werth has been a disappointment, hitting just .215 this seas on. the last time the nats entered the all-star break at or above .500 was in 2005. they were 16 games over the mark at the time but ended the season at .500. one player who hopes to help the nats win more games in the future, bryce harper played in the future game in arizona. he was a huge attraction before the game, slugging a towering 340-foot home run in batting practice. he also signed some autographs for fans. unfortunately, though, he could not carry the momentum into the actual game. he went 0 for 4 and had two strikeouts in the game. two bad, but he'll still be around for a while. our time is 4:55. coming up, why a space walk for the astronauts on board "atlantis" could be more

welcome back. tiger woods is set to make an announcement this morning. he's set to make an appearance on the golf channel at 11:00. woods has not played since the players championship in which he withdrew after nine months after reinjuring his knee and achilles tendon. it's still not known what he will be talking about.

this morning nasa is tracking a piece of space junk that could be headed straight for the international space station. the shuttle lts "atlantis" dock there over the weekend. nasa says it will have a better idea today how big this object might be. they're concerned it may collide with the iss tomorrow. meanwhile today the crew of "atlantis" begins unloading a year's worth of supplies delivered to the space station. astronauts will use a robotic arm to lift a carrier out of the shuttle and attach it to the station. and today nasa will once again launch a low altitude aircraft over maryland to test the air quality. the research aircraft will fly over the beltway in parts of northeast maryland from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. today. the plane will fly as low as 1,000 feet off the ground while it takes measurements. this is one of 14 air quality flights nasa has planned for the month of july. >> it's 4:59. stay with us.
